JIMMY WARNER DESIGN,
Painting The House Across the Street
It could have been a painful tangerine
Or a storm drain grayish blue-green,
The rush to envision, to paint a future,
Misty optimistic persevering dwelling
With a hue of pride and coming danger,
Intersecting dark with a darker view.
The purpose of our spaces wanders
Into the present dragging a broken toy.
What do you want said of your digs to
Eager buyers fifty years hence, a big
New fence, the future sewed up, or the
Sci-fi drama with hovercraft overhead?
The house across the street is legend
Enough, heroic in scope, neurotic to any
Who enter, remembering what flickers
Stood the test, and little else mentioned
Of a life, devoted friend, game-over glee,
Raffle winning smiles, timeless in the end.
Yes, I painted houses across the street
The same as I cherished my own house,
Made models of it, blown up with fourth
O' July fun, painted every board and brick,
Same as the slick painting you gave back
Later because the colors were too garish.
But that was every house, a mighty house,
A dream with rooms, compartments of
Freight and fritter, both frazzle frame and
Frigidaire, cool beyond its lease of years,
A hand painted lesson, undersigned with
My usual hand, true to the same design.
