ALTAR IMAGE

The doting camera of the past
Doesn't tell us who we were.
The letter, the note, the poem,
Is only an after image of what
We wanted to do with ourselves
Learning is part of the fun,
Going from one life to the next.

There's always more than one;
The past is many doors and exits,
Too many to explain transition or
Why one vain kick led to another.
Someone waited in a strange room
Behind each wild blue guess -
A different music in the wings.

If I knew you were still there in the
Last doorway, sure of yourself,
Monogramming things, practicing
Our Mr. and Mrs. name, in a wink
I would have done it all different,
Should have paid more attention
When we took our first deep look.

We made it just the same, a new
Song emerged, a picture of joy,
Sparked and fired us into the
Foundry links we are today, but
I ponder the images we collect,
The gray image traipsing behind
A shutter click from every desire.
