RUN DOWN THESE MOUNTAINS

It is easier to feign madness than
explain sanity to a bunch of idiots.

Like Handel riffing on God's blast of nostrils, we dig the grand sneeze of creation down to the simplest beat, the hand on drum skin, heart pounding, arm-in-arm beat,
air-kissing, weaving like children in the clear day.

We are drunk as party streamers, wavering on a
culture so free as to appear mad, feasting
on excesses, speaking an ever complex word
of the street, eleven syllable choruses of
strange-love and curio pharmacology,
chancing fortunes on doubtful odds.

We nest in accidental clusters
and disperse in wisps of
summer nights to a
darker rim of
emptiness
only to
run

down
these mountains
again, announcing a
return to joy .

The elder,
 who appears just as mad,
looks off to a landscape, which
by now has become as eternal as the
whisper of his old heart.

Like all the purple
between the green of the hills,
it is background to someone,
to others, awareness.

In a placid lake,
 the mountain and the clouds
rest upside down,
