August 2009

Painting by my uncle Jimmie Pond copied from a snapshot (WWII)

Ludmilla Over Coffee

She sits in portrait space with imagined cups of coffee

So much broader shoulders than sympathy ever bore,

Occupies an archive of fantasy and a borderline deep

Set isolation that must have carried my war hero, my

Antagonist, thru all reports of wartime tribulation, thru

Self-abuse as well, like a muse of everything, her aura

Shining with temptations he dare not explore except in

His trail of drama left behind, too well noticed to evade

A legend of sumptuous beauty, youth and design, no

Saga of sweetness tho, ending on some ever-after note.

My war bridegroom-hero was married to a wallet photo

Handed him by a ham fisted German prison guard, who

Had no import of symbolism or hint of a muse that  could

Carry my P.O.W. uncle all the way to a smokers grave,

Throat cut, muse and artist forever kept a table, over

Coffee & would be remarks in forgotten echoes of a

Coffeehouse in Tunisia, their wine dark possibilities of

Romance as fey as the phantom bedroom where they

Never slept.
