a fall collection
Halloween poem

A Boy and His Homework

Faded reds and browns, picture
a boy scrunched beneath a tree,
mimicking fall cover, his gaze a
thousand horizons distant, lost in
a sky filled with sounds of wetlands.

The bare moon hangs like stone,
the first stars shoulder a cross
or a goose, the symbol unclear
as darkness surrounds all.

Scribbling awkward marks,
the boy has a self-prescribed
homework ahead of him,
a glossary of natural sensation
to put to use before his mind can rest.

As he praises nature,
the fall of night makes
a reassuring cacophony of
multiplying creatures in the wild,
but none more bizarre than he.

To Be Art

Every scene, every window
photo or painting, portrait of life
or phenomenal view from afar,
each glimpse captured by man,
bears in common, star-like,
a secret truth, tucked away
inside its waking moment
of shared existence,

so subtle it becomes illusive,
So obvious it dares to be art.

Happy Halloween
