DECEMBER  2010

The 19th century was the century of relevance,
the 20th, the century of irrelevance, the 21st...?
Your turn, be inspired.

                                                Smoky Nymph 2

My Significant Irrelevant Other
(disguised as a nymphet muse in a tree)

A nymphet muse, a bit gray-eyed
And hard to see thru the branches,
Draws me near for poetic council,
Makes me pledge undying loyalty
To all of her inspired imaginings.
No other shall intervene after
The affairs of quiet dreaming.

She is only one avatar, one tiny
Misrepresentation of the dream.

Her soul has saved me every time
I venture into vast terrain where
Nights taunt my brains each time
I launch my campaign to track
Her moves, creature of the wild
Who sparingly gives up her clues,
Hints of her significant irrelevance.

She is like the cheerleader who
Doesnít smoke, drink or get high,

Not even on left over relevance
Of other ages, the dished out
Narrative juices of a squeeze-
Dried forest, chewed up by a
Profit and pocket value incentive.
She has nowhere to go but the
Hinterlands of unexplored poetry.

No one reads that anymore unless
Thereís a story in it to be read aloud.

We can gather round a computer,
Like the campfires that used to
Make my muse quite nervous,
And invite tenderfoot adventurers
To pick metaphors and rare, new
Specimens of revived symbol.
Itís like that one odd magazine

You keep for life because
It changed your life forever.

She is pressed between its pages
Part of every history, tale of caution,
Dry, flat and lusterless, drained of
Memory, her mystical mother, her
Sisters scatted in broken frames,
Scrapbooks fading from daylight,
Her name barely legible in print.

They laughed when I told my story,
Derided me for saying I love her.

They say that hope is a bridge, so fear not my
heroic music and my trembling infrastructure...
